The Downside of Rage

Page history last edited by TC STs 4 months, 1 week ago

Once upon a time Gaia picked Garou to be her warriors, filled with rage more than any other changing breed. They could fight longer, harder and beyond normal restrictions. But with Rage... comes downsides.

Harano

You do not want this to happen. Harano destroys entire packs.

Harano is the mind killer. Harano is not just a werewolf version of depression. Harano is looking straight into the hopeless abyss and it looks back into you. You are forever changed. Harano is an inexplicable gloom, inexpressible longing for unnamable things, weeping for that which is lost never to be seen again or not yet lost. Some say it is a sickness that is caused by contemplation of Gaia's suffering. Garou who suffer from Harano are a risk to their sept and their packs.

Garou of every tribe suffer from Harano but the Silver Fangs are especially prone to it. Some Garou believe that the Silver Fangs’ burden of Harano is greater than others’ because the Fangs in someway did more to cause Gaia’s suffering than did the other tribes. Proposing such a theory is enough to provoke a violent response from some Fangs; most are wise enough to keep silent on this matter. Harano does not happen for minor things. Harano happens when you hear the howl of all the wolves who have been killed by humans. Harano comes when you feel multiple packmates die in your mind with no way to save them. Harano comes when you feel a caern defiled. Harano comes when the worst of the worst of humanity is shown to you.

Harano is a willpower chop vs storyteller determined amount (with a baseline of 10 Willpower challenge). Even the mightiest of legends are weak to this darkness even at their greatest moment.

Storytellers will never ask you to throw a chop for this lightly. It is a serious problem and should only be asked for when you feel your character has felt something so soul crushing that they have trouble breathing. If you enter Harano, you lose a permanent rage and a permanent willpower. In order to do anything but sit in empty vessel of your body, you must spend a willpower. YOU WILL BE NPC'ed OUT with the chance to be brought back to PC status if someone helps you break out. This was not always the case but it is the rule now.

Breaking out of Harano is HARD. Breaking someone out of harano is considered an Elder level rank challenge. Most breakout of it by making a dramatic personal shift that changes their very soul and being (Renouncement does not count as reaching the rank of when you fell into it would simply break you back down into this darkness again). If you break out of Harano you will gain the flaw Harano prone, because it never truly leaves you. But you can once more buy rage and willpower.

Losing The Wolf

Many old stores tell of warriors for the cause battling to the point of losing their wolf. They have lost their rage. They have lost their will. They can no longer shape shift. They are reduced to kinfolk in all ways. The loss of rage for some find blissful peace to teach next generations. Other try to awaken the rage that might still slumber within their soul. Others wish for a quick death then try to find a new way of life.

Mechanically, how does "Losing the wolf" work?  If a character has lost or spent all their Rage and Willpower points, they have “lost the wolf,” and they cannot regain Rage. The Garou cannot shift to anything except their breed form until his Rage returns. The character must regain at least one Willpower point before they can recover any Rage. How this state manifests in role play depends largely on the situation that the Garou might find themselves in. However, the state should be one of utter exhaustion as both the rational and bestial aspect of the Garou is spent. When all your temporary willpower and rage are spent, you must throw a static chop, on a loss you lose a permanently rage. You must spend downtimes (at least 3) and xp to regain the rage.

If a garou has their rage stripped from them or lose it due to age or lack of shifting they can also lose the wolf this way. Rage is a gift, not a right. If permanent rage is lost to the point where the character has none left, they can never shift again.
