Red Talon Gifts

These Gifts are available to characters of the Red Talon tribe.

Basic

Beast Speech

Activation Time: Normal

Challenge: Social vs. the animal

Retest: Animal Ken

Effect: You are able to speak with any sort of animal. If successful, you can speak not only to the target animal, but to all animals of the same type. This gift doesn't change their natures nor their reactions to the predatory nature of the Garou, nor does it force them to cooperate.

Duration: One Scene or Hour

Beastmind

Activation Time: Normal

Challenge: Social vs. target

Retest: Empathy

Effect: For a moment You bring out the animal in someone; all their higher thought functions are wiped away, and they must follow their most basic instincts.

Duration: One turn

Hidden Killer

Activation Time: Personal

Required: The Red Talon must lick the wounds she has inflicted.

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Challenge: Static Mental vs 10 traits.

Retest: Stealth

Effect: Wounds that the Red Talon inflicted with claws or teeth mystically alter themselves so that they resemble stabbing wounds. Any hair, saliva, blood, or other physicaly evidence from the werewolf's body disappears. Any peripheral damage (smashed furniture, for example) remains as it was.

Duration: Permanent

Howl to the Pack

Activation Time: Normal

To Learn: This is a Howl Gift, and may only ever be learned by Red Talons

Required: The Character must howl to activate this gift and must be in a form that allows for proper howling (Crinos, Hispo, or Lupus).

Challenge: Static Social Challenge vs 7 traits

Retest: Primal-Urge

Effect: The Talon howls, and no matter how far away, her pack hears her. The “Pack” in question might be the Garou's literal pack, bonded by a totem, or any wolf to whom the Red Talon is related. Each use of the Gift allows for one howl. To convey a concept more complicated than “warning” or “I need help” the Red Talon must engage in a second Social Challenge versus 9 traits (retest Expression). Only the intended recipients of the howl can hear the message, and they must be on the same side of the Gauntlet as you are.

Eye of the Hunter

Activation Time: Normal

Challenge: Static Mental difficult equal to the number of people in the group

Retest: Primal Urge

Effect: Wolves can sense which animal from a herd is sick or weak and therefore the easier prey. Complex creatures, like predators or humans, make this difficult for wolves. This Gift allows a Red Talon to pick out the weakest member of a group at a glance. It does not reveal why the target is the weak link, only that they are. Successfully using this gift allows you to immediately determine who the weakest member of a group is as well as who is the leader of the group. Should you enter combat against this group, you gain +1 trait on all offensive challenges versus the weakest member.

Duration: Scene or hour, or until the group changes.

Purify Meat

Activation Time: Personal

Required: Can only be used on dead meat

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Effect: By touching the meat he wishes to cleanse, the Red Talon can remove all non-supernatural toxins (chemicals, toxic waste, drugs, alcohol) from up to 50 pounds of dead meat. This gift has no effect on living creatures.

Predator's Leap

Activation Time: Personal

Required: The user must be capable of leaping at their target, and must move at least one pace

Frequency: Once per attack

Activation Cost: One Rage

Challenge: Mental vs Target

Retest: Primal-Urge

Effect: By employing this Gift, the Talon's leap “tracks” a moving target, allowing her to pounce on her prey even if said prey has dodged or fled while the Talon is in mid-leap. Upon successful use of this gift, you gain +2 traits on your next physical challenge versus the Target. After the next challenge is made, the bonus Traits are lost, whether you hit or miss.

Primal Howl

Activation Time: Normal

To Learn: This is a Howl Gift, and may only ever be learned by Red Talons

Required: The Character must howl to activate this gift and must be in a form that allows for proper howling (Crinos, Hispo, or Lupus).

Challenge: Static Physical vs 8 traits

Retest: Expression

Follow-up Cost: 0-5 Physical traits

Effect: The howls of a wolf pack evoke fear in prey who hear it, as they sense the predators approaching. This Gift allows a Red Talon to emit a howl that evokes that same reaction in anyone that can hear it. Successfully using this gift causes those nearby to become afraid of the user. Anyone who wishes to approach the Red Talon must defeat them in a Willpower Challenge (retest Primal Urge); if the Red Talon spent physical traits activating this gift, they gain these traits as a bonus to their Willpower for this challenge. Other Garou and wolves are not affected by this gift.

Duration: For as long as the Red Talon continues to howl

Primal Instinct

Activation Time: Normal

Required: This gift only functions against mundane humans

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Challenge: Social vs target

Retest: Animal Ken

Follow-up Cost: 0-2 Social Traits

Effect: Successful use of this gift allows the Red Talon to strip away the layers of humanity that cover up man's basic instincts. A human assaulted with this Gift finds himself behaving like a beast. With no follow-up socials spent, the human becomes absent minded, preoccupied with thoughts of food and sex. With one social trait spent, the human begins to growl at threats, fight over food, and make uninvited sexual overtures. With two social traits spent all thoughts of civilization vanish in favor of basic drives of survival; the target tears off their clothes, runs through the streets, only stopped when they are tranquilized or beaten into unconsciousness.

Duration: Scene or one hour

Scent of Running Water

Activation Time: At Will

Effect: Your scent is washed away from the world as if you had just stepped through a river. All challenges trying to track you by scent suffer two-Trait penalty.

Sense of the Prey

Activation Time: Normal

Required: Knowledge of your target; the target is in the same realm as you

Challenge: Mental vs. target if they are actively hiding; automatic success if they're not

Retest: Enigmas

Effect: If your target is in the same realm as you (Earth, the Penumbra, a particular Umbral Realm, etc.), then you gain an unerring sense of which direction you must go to find them. You can move directly towards them as fast as you are able to travel.

Shadows of the Impergium (W20)

Activation Time: Automatic

Effect: Your Hispo form invokes the Delirium, though the victim is considered to have an effective Willpower of 2 higher for determining their reaction. The Delirium inflicted by Crinos is worsened, reducing the effective Willpower of anyone subject to the Delirium by 5 (minimum of 1) for determining their reaction.

Duration: Always in effect, unless intentionally suppressed (which lasts one scene).

Wolf at the Door

Activation Time: Normal

Required: A non-Garou target with whom you make eye contact

Challenge: Social vs. target (if the target is a kinfolk, mage, ghoul or other supernatural, they get a two-Trait bonus)

Retest: Primal Urge

Follow-up Cost: 0-5 Mental Traits

Effect: You insinuate a terror in your target that makes it difficult for them to set foot outside the house, let alone enter a wild place. For the duration, your target must make a Willpower challenge vs. your Gnosis or Social Traits (whichever is higher) to leave their home. They are at a two-Trait penalty to all Mental and Social challenges while away from home. Going anywhere near a forest requires the target to spend a point of Willpower.

Duration: One day, plus one per Mental Trait spent

Intermediate

Elemental Favor

Activation Time: Normal

Challenge: static Social vs. a nature spirit

Retest: Subterfuge

Effect: You compel a natural elemental to abandon its material form, destroying a particular object. A sheet of ice could shatter, a cliffside could crumble, a tree could die and drop its leaves, etc. The Storyteller adjudicates the specific effect, though it usually won't cause severe direct damage. (Although if you are standing beneath a crumbling cliffside, you might take some serious indirect damage.)

Form of Akhlut

Activation Time: Personal

Activation Cost: Two Gnosis

Challenge: Static Physical vs 12 traits

Retest: Primal Urge

Follow-up Cost: 0-2 Physical traits

Effect: This Gift allows a Red Talon to take on an aquatic form. With no additional traits spent, the Red Talon becomes a fish no larger than a bass. With one additional trait spent, the Red Talon may take on a form as large as a dolphin. With two additional traits spent he could turn into the genuine killer whale of legend.

Duration: Up to one day, or until the Red Talon chooses to end it.

Gaze of the Hunter

Activation Time: Normal

Required: The Red Talon must lock gazes with the target

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Challenge: Social vs Target

Retest: Intimidation

Effect: The user stares into the eyes of an intended victim, and communicates to them the ancient bond between predator and prey – beginning the sacred hunt. A victim of this gift understands the link and will act accordingly: Wild animals will run into the open, allowing the hunter to eventually catch and kill them. Humans and domesticated animals, for whom this is a terrifying experience, may run or cower, terrified. No victim will begin a fight, although if the Red Talon pursues and catches the prey, a battle may ensue. This Gift does not work against other Garou, but will be effective against other supernatural creatures the Garou may set out to hunt.

Duration: Scene or hour

Gorge

Activation Time: Automatic

To Learn: You must learn this gift separately for each type of Trait you want to store (Rage, Gnosis or Willpower); you can only learn it once per type.

Effect: Just like you gorge on meat in the winter when you don't know if you'll get another meal, so too have you learned to gorge on spiritual power for dire situations. You may call on three additional Traits per night of one type you select when you learn the Gift -- Rage, Gnosis, or Willpower. You may refresh these spent Traits by normal means, but they do not add to your Trait totals in Challenges.

Duration: Always in effect

Howl of Death

Activation Time: Normal

To Learn: This is a Howl Gift, and may only ever be learned by Red Talons

Required: The Character must howl to activate this gift and must be in a form that allows for proper howling (Crinos, Hispo, or Lupus).

Frequency: This gift may be used more than once per turn, and is not subject to the five-minute rule

Challenge: Social vs Target

Retest: Primal Urge

Effect: A Talon blessed with this Gift may infuse her howl with Rage and pain, causing grievous wounds to one target. The user must have uninterrupted line of sight and be within earshot of the target. Success causes two levels of lethal damage, which manifests as massive internal damage as organs rupture.

Howl of Hunger

Activation Time: Normal

To Learn: This is a Howl Gift, and may only ever be learned by Red Talons

Required: The Character must howl to activate this gift and must be in a form that allows for proper howling (Crinos, Hispo, or Lupus).

Challenge: Social Challenge vs number of enemies

Retest: Intimidation

Follow-up Cost: 1-5 Social traits & 1 Gnosis (optional)

Effect: Wolves gorge themselves when they eat, especially during cold winter months, because they cannot be sure when they will find food. Most humans know nothing of this kind of hunger, as they have their food handed to them. Upon successfully activating this gift, anyone within earshot suffers a two-trait penalty on all Mental and Physical challenges as they suffer from hunger pangs. If the Red Talon spent a Gnosis when activating this gift, their packmate is unaffected. Only those who know physical hunger for food are affected – vampires, risen, and similar creatures are unaffected. Any Garou struck by this Gift must immediately test for frenzy (although even a Garou in frenzy is subject to the trait penalties). Frenzied werewolves are likely to feast on any meat they can find if subjected to frenzy from this gift, much like a homid Garou in Thrall of the Wyrm.

Duration: For as long as the Red Talon focuses on this howl, plus one turn per social trait spent after the howl ends

Mother's Rage

Activation Time: Personal

Required: This Gift may only be used in defense of something or someone of great value, such as a wounded packmate, Kinfolk, cubs, a caern, etc.

Activation Cost: 2 Rage

Effect: Like a mother wolf that becomes truly dangerous when protecting her cubs, willing to fight against enemies which she would normally flee from, the Red Talon using this gift is able to harness her Rage and use it to defend something of equal value. Upon activating this gift, the Red Talon enters a kind of controlled frenzy. They are bound by the normal rules for frenzy (including not attacking packmates if your Rage is less than your Gnosis) but you will not leave the vicinity of your charge. In addition you gain 2x Healthy health levels (these are not considered armor, and may stack with other such benefits) and the Physical Traits Strong x2.

Duration: Until your charge is out of danger, or the scene ends, whichever comes first.

Quicksand

Activation Time: Normal

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Challenge: Social vs. eight Traits

Retest: Primal Urge

Follow-up Cost: 0-5 Mental Traits

Effect: You liquify an area of ground, turning it into a viscous sludge that clings to the feet of everyone who moves through it -- except you. This affects a ten-foot radius of earth, plus an additional ten feet per Mental Trait you spent. In this area, standard combat movement becomes one step, combat challenges take a one-Trait penalty, and nobody can execute any combat maneuvers that require special movement. You, of course, are the exception, moving freely through the area and harrying your foes at no penalty.

Duration: One Scene

Recycle

Activation Time: Normal

Required: Touch a man-made substance

Challenge: Rage vs. difficulty based on complexity of material (6 for iron, 7 for plastic, 9 for complex metal alloys)

Retest: Primal Urge

Follow-up Cost: 0-5 Mental Traits

Effect: You accelerate the ravages of time on a man-made substance, decomposing it to its natural elements. Five pounds of material decomposes in this way, plus an additional five pounds for each Mental Trait you spent.

Territory

Activation Time: Personal

Required: The Red Talon must first mark the area with his own urine

Challenge: Static Mental Challenge vs 12 traits

Retest: Primal-Urge

Effect: A Red Talon with this Gift doesn't need to patrol his hunting ground to know what transpires there. With a moment of concentration, and a successful mental challenge, you may extend your senses to a spot that you have marked, allowing you to sense it as though you were physically present (this includes the usage of supernatural sensory gifts).

Duration: A location remains marked for 1 week (in the wilderness) or 1 day (in the city) per permanent Gnosis the character possesses.

Trackless Waste

Activation Time: Normal

Required: You know the territory where you're using this gift.

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Challenge: static Mental vs. six Traits

Retest: Primal Urge

Follow-up Cost: 0-5 Mental Traits

Effect: You enchant a region against travel, making it impossible for those within to find their way. Within a two-mile radius (plus an additional two for each Mental Trait you spend), compasses point randomly, maps give bad directions and GPS signals are scrambled -- even landmarks seem to shift location. Travelers within the area get lost and stay lost. If Garou are in the area, they may win a Mental Challenge (retest Primal Urge) against you to find their way.

Duration: Four hours

Advanced

Blessing of the First Pack

Activation Time: Normal

To Learn: The Red Talon must have at least 1 point of the Ancestors background.  No other tribe may learn this gift.

Activation Cost: Two Gnosis Traits

Challenge: The Red Talon must engage in a standard Ancestors challenge to activate this gift, including botching chops if they fail.

Effect: Red Talons believe that the very first pack of Garou set the standards for the auspices, and that only the Talons retain a strong enough connection to that First Pack to use this Gift. This may or may not be true, but no non-Talon Garou has ever exhibited this mighty Gift. Success activating this gift infuses the Red Talon with the very essence of her Auspice. The character receives 5 dots of Pure Breed in addition to any she already possesses. She may also make use of any auspice Gift for her particular auspice of Intermediate Rank or lower. In addition the character grants a power based on the character's auspice: Ragabash: +3 traits on Stealth-based Challenges, the Mental trait Wily x2, and Physical Trait Quick x2. Theurge: +3 traits on Engimas-based Challenges, the Mental Trait Intelligent x2, and two Gnosis Traits which are treated as Permanent Gnosis Philodox: +3 traits on Rituals-based Challenges, the Social Trait Manipulative x2, and Physical Trait Tough x2 Galliard: +3 traits on Expression-based Challenges, the Social Trait Charismatic x2, and Physical Trait Tough x2 Ahroun: +3 traits on Leadership-based Challenges, the Physical Trait Strong x2, and two Rage Traits which are treated as Permanent Rage

Duration: Scene or one hour.

Curse of Lycan

Activation Time: Normal

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Challenge: Gnosis vs. target's Willpower

Retest: Primal Urge

Effect: You impose a powerful wolf-nature upon your target. Against a fellow Garou, this has the effect of forcing them into Lupus shape for a day. Against a human, this permanently transforms them into a wolf -- body, mind and spirit.

Duration: One day vs. Garou; permanently vs. humans

Gaia’s Vengeance

Activation Time: Normal

Activation Cost: One Gnosis and one Rage (yes, this is an exception)

Challenge: static Social vs. the Gauntlet rating

Retest: Primal Urge

Effect: You unleash the wrath of the wilderness against your foes. Every natural feature in the area attacks the intruders in any way possible: trees drop heavy branches on them, sinkholes open beneath unwary feet, tides pull victims under, brambles entangle them, etc. The exact effects are up to the Storyteller.

Duration: Storyteller-determined

Scabwalker Curse (W20)

Activation Time: Normal

Activation Cost: One Gnosis

Challenge: Social vs. target

Retest: Survival

Follow-up Cost: 0-5 Social Traits

Effect: Your target becomes violently allergic to all works of the Weaver. In any turn that they have physical contact with a non-natural material (e.g., plastic, concrete), they take one level of bashing damage.

Duration: One day, plus one day per trait spent

Shattering Howl

Activation Time: Normal

To Learn: This is a Howl Gift, and may only ever be learned by Red Talons

Required: The Character must howl to activate this gift and must be in a form that allows for proper howling (Crinos, Hispo, or Lupus).

Activation Cost: One Willpower

Follow-up Cost: 1-5 Rage

Effect: By using this Gift, the Garou releases a howl with enough power to shatter any man-made object. Based on the number of Rage spent, it damages the following types of material: One trait: Glass, Two traits: Plastic, Three traits: Concrete, Four traits: Iron, Five traits: Steel. The werewolf does not have any control over what she shatters with this Gift, however, so she is advised to use it with care.
