Philodox Gifts
These Gifts are available to characters of the Philodox Auspice.
Basic Gifts
Building a Legend (W20)
Activation Time: Automatic
Effect: The Philodox are the natural leaders of the Garou in times of peace, bolstered by the faith and trust given to them by their charges. Whenever the character gains a point of permanent Renown, he regains Willpower points up to his permanent rating.
|
Call to Duty
Activation Time: Normal
Activation Cost: To call all spirits (see effect) Two Gnosis, otherwise none
Required: To call a specific spirit (see effect) you must know the name of a local, non-hostile spirit
Challenge: To call a specific spirit (see effect) static Social vs. the spirit, otherwise none
Retest: To call a specific spirit (see effect) Leadership, otherwise
Effect: By invoking the name of a local, non-hostile spirit (which you must have learned by some other means), you summon it to appear. You may give it a single command, which it obeys to the best of its ability; once this is done, the spirit is free to leave. Alternatively, if you spent two Gnosis you can summon all non-hostile spirits within one mile to aid or protect you.
|
Command the Gathering (W20)
Activation Time: Normal
Activation Cost: One Willpower
Challenge: Static Social vs number of people present
Retest: Leadership
Effect: You draw all eyes to yourself with a great exclamation, a clap of your hands, or something similar. Until you have had your say, none may depart or interrupt you; those wishing to do so must spend two Willpower, at which point they may speak or leave the area. This gift is ill-suited for a combat gift, as you and your allies are just as restrained by the powers of this Gift as your enemies will be.
Duration: One speech
|
Fangs of Judgement (W20)
Activation Time: Personal
Activation Cost: One Willpower
Effect: Your natural weaponry becomes empowered to bring judgment to those who have betrayed Gaia. Any Brawl-based attack deals one additional level of aggravated damage to creatures such as Black Spiral Dancers, fomori, or corrupted nature spirits; this Gift has no effect on any creature which is either not of the Wyrm (e.g., drones, fae, etc), or was Wyrmish from its creation (e.g., Banes which were never Gaian).
Duration: One scene or hour.
|
Firm Stance (W20)
Activation Time: Reflexive
Required: You are engaged in a Defensive Social Challenge and about to compare Traits
Activation Cost: One Willpower
Effect: More than any other auspice, the Philodox is held in esteem for their great honor. A Philodox with this gift can turn that esteem into a veritable shield against the insidious sway of the Wyrm, or the misguided arguments of less honorable allies. By spending a Willpower, the Philodox gains a number of social traits for defending against a social challenge equal to their Honor. This gift may be spent mid-challenge after a chop is thrown, but before traits are stated, and may be activated on later challenges if retests are utilized. This gift does not work against Garou that have higher Honor than the Philodox.
Duration: A single challenge
|
King of the Beasts
Activation Time: Normal
Required: An animal within 100 feet
Frequency: You may affect only one animal at a time
Challenge: static Social vs. three Traits for a wolf you're related to, six Traits for an animal you care for, eight Traits for an unfamiliar animal, or ten Traits for an unfriendly animal
Retest: Animal Ken
Effect: You exert a mystic dominance over the target animal, winning its loyalty instantly. It will follow your orders unconditionally.
|
Ma'at's Feather
Activation Time: Normal
Required: This gift can only be used upon a dead Garou
Challenge: Static Gnostic Challenge vs the deceased's former Gnosis Rating
Retest: Occult
Effect: By using this gift the Philodox is able to determine if a Garou died in service to Gaia, or if they had fallen to the Wyrm before they died. This gift does not determine how the dead Garou betrayed Gaia, only whether or not they did.
|
Moon Lore
Activation Time: Personal
Challenge: static Mental vs. six Traits
Retest: Primal Urge
Follow-up Cost: optionally, one Mental Trait
Effect: You learn the phase of the moon under which a nearby target person was born. If you spent the Mental Trait, you also learn weather the moon was waxing or waning at the time.

Challenge: Mental vs. difficulty based on environmental cues: 15 Traits in an empty room, 11 Traits in a city, 8 Traits in the wilderness

|

|
Strength of Purpose
Activation Time: Normal
Frequency: Once per game session
Challenge: extended Physical vs. 11 Traits
Retest: Rituals

|
Truth of Gaia
Activation Time: Reflexive
Required: Your target has just made a statement you wish to test.
Challenge: Mental vs. target
Retest: Empathy
Effect: You hear the ring of truth and deception in the words of others. If you win the challenge, you can tell if the target has deliberately lied to you. The gift cannot detect lies that the target actually believes -- misinformation and altered memories foil this gift.
|

|
Flow Like Water (W20)
Activation Time: Personal
Activation Cost: One Willpower
Effect: Like the axiom of water overcoming stone, the Philodox learns to flow past his foe's attacks to strike where they don't expect it. For the duration of the scene, each round, whenever the Philodox takes a defensive action they gain a +1 trait bonus on their next offensive action, and whenever they take an offensive actions they gain a +1 trait bonus on their next defensive action. These bonuses do not last between rounds, and do not stack.

|
Power of the Ways
Activation Time: Normal
Frequency: May only be used to regain each temper once per game session.
Challenge: extended Willpower vs. 5 Traits

|
Reality's Path
Activation Time: Personal
Challenge: Mental Challenge vs. 11 Traits
Retest: Enigmas
Follow-up Cost: optionally, three Mental Traits
Effect: Truth is subjective, but Philodox cannot afford that luxury. You may determine whether words your target believes to be true are actually true, regardless of the target's beliefs. Success tells you if your target is speaking an unintentional falsehood; by spending three Mental Traits, you can tell whether someone deliberately misinformed them.
Note: This Gift only works when a subject speaks what he truly believes; packmates can’t go on “fishing expeditions” by throwing out names to determine who really committed a deed, for example. Reality’s path deals with knowable facts, not greater spiritual truths (you could determine the truth of the statement "I single-handedly slew a Nexus Crawler", but not the statement "Falcon will someday defeat the Wyrm").
|
Rebirth (W20)
Activation Time: Normal
Activation Cost: One Gnosis
Challenge: Extended Social Challenge vs (12 + health levels inflicted)
Retest: Primal Urge
Effect: The Philodox with this gift breaths new life into an animal that has been dead no longer than (Permanent Gnosis) months and carries no Wyrm taint. Upon activation the Garou suffers a number of unsoakable lethal health levels based on the size of the corpse. Small animals such as rodents require one level; medium animals such as wolves require two; large animals such as horses require three; and enormous creatures such as elephants require four or more at ST discretion. The Garou may chop once per round, and must accumulate a number of successes equal to the health levels inflicted. Once they have their own blood forms new muscle and flesh, filling in the gaps in the body until the creature is whole again. The revived creature is wholly loyal to the Philodox, but returns to its original state once the scene is ended. A corpse cannot be subjected to this gift more than once.
Duration: One scene or hour
|
Roll Over
Activation Time: Normal
Frequency: This gift is specially subject to the five-minute rule (i.e., if it fails, you cannot attempt it against the same target until five in-game minutes have passed).
Challenge: Willpower vs. target.
Retest: Intimidation, and possible Primal urge.
Effect: Bearing down on your target with an irresistible force of will, you compel them to submit. For the duration, your target may take no action other than submission to you unless they are directly endangered.
Duration: One scene or hour
|
Scent of Beyond
Activation Time: Normal
Required: You are familiar with the area you want to sense
Challenge: static Mental vs. six to fifteen Traits, depending on your familiarity with the place
Retest: Enigmas
Effect: You can extend your senses to any place you are familiar with. You perceive that area as if you're standing in the middle of it. While your senses are extended this way, you become totally unaware of what is happening in your actual physical vicinity.
Duration: Up to one scene; you may end it at will
|
Scent of the Oathbreaker (W20)
Activation Time: Personal
Required: You witness someone making an oath or promise (they need not be sincere, but must intend to be taken as sincere).
Activation Cost: One Gnosis
Effect: You sanctify an oath made by one or more persons, gaining the power to enforce that promise. If the terms of the oath are violated by any of those sworn to it, you immediately become aware of this. Furthermore, any attempt to track the oathbreaker by scent gains a free retest. This benefit applies only until the next time you are in the oathbreaker's presence.
Duration: For as long as the oath still applies
|
Sense Balance
Activation Time: Personal
Required: The Garou must be focused and at peace (thus it cannot be used while in combat, or while the Philodox is exhausted)
Activation Cost: One Gnosis
Challenge: Static Mental Challenge vs 12 traits
Retest: Enigmas
Effect: By focusing on a target (which can be an area, person, or inanimate objects) and succeeding on the mental challenge, the Philodox becomes innately aware of an imbalance in the Triatic Forces. Wyrm manifestations feel dense and oily, Weaver presence feels cold and unyielding, and Wyld energies feel warm and trembling.
|
Take the True Form
Activation Time: Normal
Challenge: Social vs. target
Retest: Primal Urge
Effect: At your command, your target must forgo all shapeshifting. They instantly assume their natural form (breed form, for Garou and other Fera; human, for shapeshifting vampires) and they cannot use any further shapeshifting powers for the duration.

|

Duration: One scene or combat, whichever ends first.
|
Wisdom of the Ancient Ways
Activation Time: Personal
Challenge: Gnosis vs. 9 Traits (minus one Trait per level of Ancestors you have)
Retest: Occult
Follow-up Cost: 1 or 2 Mental Traits
Effect: Through a moment of meditation, you reach out for answers to the Garou who have gone before, be they your own ancestors or other warriors of yore. You recall their memories or summon up ancient lore. Ask the Storyteller for the information you seek: if you spend one Mental Trait it is clear but broad information, while if you spend two Traits the information is detailed and specific.
|
Advanced Gifts
Geas

Activation Cost: One Gnosis
Challenge: Social vs. target; or, vs. highest Social among all members of the target pack or family
Retest: Leadership
Effect: You lay a mystically binding oath over a target or group or targets. The requirements of this oath may not override basic self-preservation, but it has significant leeway otherwise. The target or targets are compelled to obey the oath until an assigned task is completed -- or until another use of Geas cancels the compulsion.
Duration: Until the task is completed, or until Geas is used to cancel the compulsion
|
Soul's Guilt
Activation Time: Normal
Challenge: Mental vs. target
Retest: Empathy
Effect: You can now see into the heart of your subjects, determining what guilt they hide. Success allows you to tell if the subject is feeling guilty about anything, and how intense that feeling is.
|
Wall of Granite
Activation Time: Personal
Frequency: Once per scene
Required: You are in contact with earth or stone
Activation Cost: One Gnosis
Effect: Calling on the strong bond between the Philodox auspice and earth elementals, you summon a moving barrier of stone to protect you. A wall nine feet tall, six feet wide and three feet thick emerges from the earth to protect you, moving automatically to guard you from all angles. It absorbs fifteen Health Levels of damage before being destroyed.
